Film screening and discussion (Munich)

Open Scene "Okupácia 1968 / Occupation 1968"

07.03.2019 19:00  – 22:00

Five short films from five countries, five directors and an event that unites them all: In the context of the MITTEL PUNKT EUROPA Filmfest 2019, an evening event will be devoted to cinematic approaches to the violent suppression of the Prague Spring in August 1968 at the Film Museum Munich on Thursday, 7 March 2019. The event takes place in cooperation with the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies.

The crushing of the Prague Spring is mostly told from the point of view of the "victims" - the Czechs and Slovaks. "Okupácia 1968 / Occupation 1968", however, focuses on the "perpetrators". Fifty years after the brutal suppression of the protests, filmmakers from the countries involved in the invasion reflect on their role in the occupation. Personal fates as well as national perspectives on the invasion are presented. Films from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland are shown in the original language with German subtitles (director: Linda Dombrovszky, Magdalena Szymków, Stephan Komandarev, Jevdokia Moskvina and Marie Elisa Scheidt).

The film screening will be complemented by a discussion with students of the Elite Graduate Program for East European Studies, who took part in the project course "Leap into the Unknown - The Prague Spring in the Mirror of International Media" under the direction of Prof. Dr. Martin Schulze Wessel and Dr. Christiane Brenner which examined the reactions of the European press on the events of the Prague Spring

This event is aimed not only at university members, but above all at the interested public.
