[Job offer] Professorship (W2) (5 years/tenure track) of Social Sciences Studies of Eastern Europe

The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) offers a Professorship (W2) (5 years/tenure track) of Social Sciences Studies of Eastern Europe with research and teaching responsibilities in the area of social sciences within the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies. The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Germany. The Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies is organized jointly by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität and the Universität Regensburg. The Graduate School is funded by Germany’s Excellence Initiative operating from 2012 until October 2017.

Research at the Graduate School is conducted in three broad, interdisciplinary fields:

• Social and political change
• Cultural order
• Infrastructure, migration and transfers of knowledge

Duties

The successful candidate is expected to fully assume research and teaching responsibilities in the area of social sciences within the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies. The position is based at the Institute of Sociology.

The candidate’s research should focus on issues surrounding the analysis of change within post-socialist societies. This should involve a combination of theory driven research and a specialisation on the countries of East-Central and Southeast Europe and/or the successor states of the Soviet Union. Knowledge of at least one east European language and good national and international ties to the scientific community are a prerequisite.

Conditions

It is expected that the successful candidate contributes to the social scientific profile of research on Eastern Europe in an interdisciplinary manner. He or she should significantly contribute to the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies and be able to cooperate with other participating subjects as well as develop joint teaching and research projects, for example within the interdisciplinary master degree East European Studies.

The Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies is a joint facility of LMU Munich and the University of Regensburg and is funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German state and federal governments. A special feature of its research program is the analysis of connections and relations of East and Southeast Europe with other regions of the world. Following subject groups contribute to the graduate school: History, Literature, Linguistics, Fine Arts, Political Science and Law. With regard to the inter-regional comparative research, other area studies also participate including Sinology, Japanese Studies and North American Studies.

LMU Munich seeks to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourages early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university and a doctoral degree. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.

The initial appointment will be for five years. After a minimum of three years, it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.
