[Call for Applications] Elite Graduate Program for East European Studies

The Elite Graduate Program for East European Studies that is run by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Universität Regensburg called for applications for the winter semester 2018/19.

Analyze Eastern Europe

The aim of the graduate program is to teach regional competence for Central Eastern, South Eastern and Eastern Europe. Students learn to analyze developments and situations in Eastern Europe and place them in their respective political, social, legal,economic, historic and cultural contexts. Besides specialist knowledge and linguistic competence, the course furnishes students with the key skills they will later need in order to take up positions of responsibility in politics, culture, business and academics. The courses have an interdisciplinary and comparative character. In addition, you will be required to complete intensive language courses, a summer academy in Eastern Europe and work experience in a field which is relevant to Eastern Europe. The graduate program is part of the Elite Network of Bavaria.

Special features of the four semesters degree program include modular, research-based and hands-on project courses, which teach a wide range of practical skills and end with a public presentation of research results (in the form of an exhibition, book, website or similar), internships, summer schools in Eastern Europe, intensive mentoring and an international approach. The subjects offered in Munich are History of Eastern andS outhEastern Europe„„, Slavonic Studies„„, Political Science„„, European Ethnology„„, Jewish History and Culture„„, Turkish and Ottoman Studies„„ and General and Compara­tive Literature Studies. In Regensburg they offer Law„„, Slavonic Studies„„, Comparative Literature Studies, „„History of South Eastern and Eastern Europe and „„Economics.

In addition to professors from the Eastern Europe departments of the two universities involved, numerous Bavarian Eastern Europe research institutions (Collegium Carolinum, Leibnitz Institute for East and South East European Research, Institute For Eastern Law, Bavarian State Library) are involved in the degree program. The degree program also collaborates with universities and research institutions in Eastern Europe. The Elite Network of Bavaria offers students exclusive soft skills seminars.

Application

We are interested in students with a proven interest in Eastern Europe who have already graduated with honors, have a basic knowledge of at least one East European language, speak German fluently and are proficient in English. We are also interested in learning how applicants are involved in social, community and political work.
