The Graduate School welcomes Polina Barvinska, Marina Mogilner, Caitlin Murdock and Meltem Toksöz as Visiting Research Fellows in Munich and Regensburg

The Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies welcomes Polina Barvinska, Marina Mogilner, Caitlin Murdock and Meltem Toksöz as Visiting Research Fellows in Munich and Regensburg.

Polina Barvinska is a Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the National I.I. Mečnykov University Odessa and member of the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission. As part of the program "Bilateral Exchange of Academics" of the German Academic Exchange Service, she is a Fellow at LMU Munich and the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies from June to August 2018. Her particular research interests include Ukrainian-German relations, East European studies in the German-speaking countries, the history of the USSR and political memory culture. In her current research project she deals with German-Ukrainian scientific and cultural interactions in the first third of the 20th century.

Marina Mogilner is an Associate Professor and Holder of the Edward and Marianna Thaden Chair in Russian and East European Intellectual History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In June and early July 2018 she is a Visiting Research Fellow of the Graduate School in Munich. The focus of her research is imperial history of Russia and the Soviet Union. Her publications cover various aspects of Russian history, for example the genesis, rise and demise of the intellectual canon of Russian radicalism of the nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries in its pan-imperial dimension and the history of Russian physical anthropology. She will discuss her current research about "Racial Purity versus Imperial Hybridity: The Case of Vladimir Jabotinsky against the Russian Empire" in the colloquium of the Graduate School on July 4.

Caitlin Murdock is Associate Professor of History at California State University, Long Beach, and the director of the History Graduate program. In June and July 2018, she is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Graduate School in Regensburg. Her research focuses on German and Czech-speaking Central Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In her book “Changing Places: Society, Culture, and Territory in the Saxon-Bohemian Borderlands, 1870-1946” she analyzes the changing dynamics in the German-Czech border area. At the graduate school colloquium on June 7 she gave an insight into her research topic "From Radium Spas to Atomic Illness: Nuclear Radiation, Popular Opinion, and Public Health in Germany 1900-1968".

Meltem Toksöz is a Visiting Associate Professor in Middle East Studies at the Department of Middle East Studies and at the History Department of the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs of of Brown University (Providence, RI). Toksöz will stay at the Graduate School as a Visiting Research Fellow in Munich in June and July 2018. Her research focuses on Ottoman Economic History, Historiography, Ottoman Social History, History of Economic Thought, Modern South Asian History and Middle Eastern History. On June 13, Toksöz will give a talk about "Global History as an Ottoman ‘Mission Civilisatrice’ - Late 19th Century Configurations" at the colloquium of the Graduate School.
