"Balkans in Flames"

The German television channel ZDF info, a branch of the public service broadcaster Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF), will broadcast the three-part documentary series "Balkans in Flames" this Wednesday night, 5 June 2019, from 8:15 to 10:30 p.m. Dr Marie-Janine Calic, Professor of East and Southeast European History at LMU Munich and principal investigator of the Graduate School, contributed to this programme as a scientific adviser and interviewee.

The three-part documentary series "Balkans in Flames" examines the collapse of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. What were the historical causes of the nationalist conflicts causing the disintegration of this state and that culminated in several wars in 1991? Why was the construct of the united Yugoslavia, which had been shaped by the then head of state Josip Broz Tito in 1945, no longer sustainable after his death? With the help of historians and contemporary witnesses, the three documentaries analyse the decline of a political and social vision.

Das Fernsehprogramm ZDF info strahlt am heutige Mittwochabend, 5. Juni 2019, von 20:15 bis 22:30 Uhr die dreiteilige Dokumentarfilm-Reihe "Balkan in Flammen" aus. Dr. Marie-Janine Calic, Professorin für Ost- und Südosteuropäische Geschichte an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München und Principal Investigator der Graduiertenschule, wirkte an der Reihe als wissenschaftliche Fachberaterin und als Interviewpartnerin mit. 

Die dreiteilige Doku-Reihe "Balkan in Flammen" untersucht den Zerfall der ehemaligen Sozialistischen Föderativen Republik Jugoslawien. Worin lagen die historischen Ursachen der nationalistischen Konflikte, die ab 1991 in mehreren Kriegen gipfelten? Warum ließ sich das Konstrukt des geeinten Jugoslawiens, das von Staatschef Josip Broz Tito 1945 geformt worden war, nach seinem Tod nicht mehr aufrechterhalten? Mithilfe von Historikern und Zeitzeugen analysieren die drei Dokumentationen den Untergang einer politischen und gesellschaftlichen Vision.
