Abstract

In this comparative study of Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union between 1954 and 1991, Jan Tesař analyses scientific atheism both as a branch of propaganda and a specific scholarly discipline. One of his key findings is undoubtedly the fact that scientific atheism developed as a new type of thinking about religious phenomena within the context of Marxist-Leninist epistemological doctrine. Moreover, if the socio-political conditions were favorable, it also contributed to the rethinking of the key aspects of Marxist doctrine. The comparative analysis allows to draw conclusions about the existence of specifically Soviet and Czechoslovakian scientific atheism and questions the level of sovietization in this context.

Mit "The History of Scientific Atheism: A Comparative Study of Czechoslovakia and Soviet Union (1954–1991)" ist soeben Jan Tesařs Dissertationsschrift im Verlag Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht erschienen.

Jahrhunderts“.

Seine Dissertation erscheint als 16. Band in der Buchreihe „Religiöse Kulturen im Europa der Neuzeit“, die vom Münchner Sprecher der Graduiertenschule für Ost- und Südosteuropastudien, Martin Schulze Wessel, gemeinsam mit Friedrich Wilhelm Graf, Miloš Havelka und Przemysław Matusik herausgegeben wird.
