Orientalism, adventure and exoticism. The Polish horse and battle scene painter Józef Brandt in Munich (1862-1915)
Subject of the dissertation project is the so-called "Polish Munich School" – a highly relevant artist colony, contributing significantly to the development of Polish painting, which clustered in Munich around Józef Brandt, Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski and Maksymilian Gierymski. The group was mostly active in the years 1870-1890 and very influential in Munich's art scene. The aim of the work is to analyze aesthetics and to explore the public’s reception to determine how Józef Brandt, who is often regarded as the main leader of the Polish colony in Munich, functioned in the Bavarian capital, what significance his paintings had for Poland in the age of divisions and why he celebrated great successes in the international art market with the depiction of Themes from Polish history. Approaches from postcolonial studies are intended to help examine to what extent the representation of dynamic equestrian scenes with Cossacks and Tartars, which are embedded in the landscape of the former Polish eastern territories, leads to the development of a "Polish Orientalism", satisfying the curiosity of the international public but at the same time leading towards the targeted exoticization or self-orietalisation of Polish history. Of interest is also the connection of this style of painting to contemporary literature, as well as to the newly developing media film and photography. One thesis is that Brandt's pictorial solutions satisfy similar needs and cause similar emotions for the viewer that are nowadays evoked by adventure and historical films in cinema.
