Civil Engineers and Capitalism in Türkiye: A Prosopographic Approach

Although Türkiye has been adapting to capitalism since the late Ottoman era, the literature on its business history remains scarce. Even the public sector is not deeply explored. Such a gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of the big picture and its ties with the global history of capitalism.

This study aims to narrate the evolution of the sub-sectors and business culture of Türkiye's leading sector, construction, up to the 1980s. It will reveal the historical underpinnings of critical issues, such as why the impact of the 2023 South Anatolian Earthquakes remains as devastating as that of the 1939 Erzincan Earthquake.

To achieve this aim, this study will utilize brand-new datasets on the career patterns of civil engineers, derived from a sectoral bulletin, in conjunction with historical writings. This approach aims to provide a methodological contribution to the burgeoning field of historical sciences by grounding the economic/business history of civil engineering in empirical evidence.

Curriculum Vitae

Saygı Tuna completed his bachelor’s degree at the History department of Marmara University in 2015. In his first master’s degree, he worked on political economic history at the Turkish Republic History Department of the same university. Followingly, he applied to a quantitative economic history program at a German University to improve his methodology and economics knowledge.

During this time, he participated in the Erasmus program at Sorbonne University and attended Global History classes upon returning to his home university. Then, he focused his efforts on data science while learning statistics and quantitative methods. He wrote his first algorithm in Python and finally finished his second master’s degree in 2022. After relatively short job experiences in Berlin, he moved to Munich for his doctoral study.

Except for his PhD candidacy, he is working on progressive methods while improving his knowledge in machine learning modeling. He is currently also a part-time data analyst at an engineering technology company.
