Profile

Nikica Gilić is Assistant Professor and Chair of Film Studies at the Department of Comparative Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. He also teaches at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb and is editor-in-chief of Croatian Film Chronicle (Hrvatski filmski ljetopis). He is author of the following books on film: Uvod u teoriju filmske priče (2007), Filmske vrste i rodovi (2007), and most recently Uvod u povijest hrvatskog igranog filma (2010) for which he received the Vladimir Vuković award from the Croatian Association of Film Critics. During his stay as Visiting Fellow in Regensburg in October and November 2014 he will be focusing on his new research project that is dealing with the concept of European modernist cinema (of the 1960s and, to an extent, 1970s), which is a decidedly international and/or transnational. He is therefore investigating the modernist contribution of authors such as Vatroslav Mimica, Vladimir Kristl and Zvonimir Berković to the European, Yugoslav (and, from a more contemporary perspective Croatian) phenomenon. Comparison to German independent and "marginal" film production would be of great interest to such an investigation, particularly since Vladimir Kristl became a German artist after leaving Yugoslavia and settling to "West Germany" (in a French book from the 60’s on German contemporary cinema Kristl was described as "Roman Polanski gone mad"). This topic seems to be interesting from various vantage points but the cinema, due to the complex production environments in which a film is made, is probably the most indicative of the general conclusions that could be drawn from the data on the international, national and/or local variants of modernist art.
